Martinez Hands Honstein First Loss In Dramatic Fashion!
Posted on: June 28, 20092 comments so far (is that a lot?)
The Crown Plaza Event Center once again played host to the King of Champions latest promotion entitled “Night of Champions” in which the 135lb pro title was on the line in the Main Event and two amateur straps were up for grabs to round out a great night of championship action.
KOC is continuing to excel to the top of the Colorado fight organizations with exceptional fight cards, equipment and lighting leaving fans felling they have received a great night of MMA in exchange for their hard earned dollars. In the main event, Nick Honstein and Danny Martinez faced up for the KOC bantam weight title.
This fight was nonstop action with many submission attempts and brutal strikes being landed by both warriors inside the cage. We began the first with Honstein letting his legs fly proceeded by a takedown and a little GNP that was quickly interrupted by Martinez rising to his feet.
Honstein responded with another takedown to full mount transition and once again his opponent regained his footing.
Martinez moved on to show his stand up skills landing a beautiful straight left allowing him the opportunity to take the fight to the ground on his terms, and end up in side control.
Martinez defiantly made best of the situation landing atrocious GNP before moving to the mount and continuing the punishment. As we approached the end of the first stanza, Honstein rolled over giving up his back and Martinez locked in a triangle and once again continued with the hostility.
Honstein maintained a great defense against the choke but had no answer to the striking from the back position.
Round two began with Honstein hitting the canvas from another right hand that was straight down the pipe. Martinez allowed no time for recovery and moved back to his dominating GNP and vicious elbows. Martinez kept with his relentless game plan, improve his position and delivering a variety of strikes.
Once again Martinez moved to the full mount and delivered dominating elbows leaving little room for Honstein to position himself to lock in one of his bread and butter submissions. Martinez maintained his punishing ground and pound game which ultimately proved too much for Honstein.
With the heart of a lion, Honstein continued with submissions giving every attempt to finish the fight while receiving a savage pounding. The referee had enough of the action at 2:06 of the second round and Martinez became the new KOC bantamweight champion with a very impressive victory over an extremely tough and well rounded Honstein.

Eric Smith and Spencer Hooker stepped in the cage for the co-main event of the evening.
Both fighters began with a great stand up exchange in the center of the canvas. Smith landed a clean right dropping Hooker next to the cage then Smith began his attack.
He seemed to have found a hole in the game of Hooker as he remained on his feet for the majority of the round controlling the legs of his downed opponent and landing some strong strikes to the head of Hooker.
Hooker was never counted out by no means, as he would periodically work to his feet and swing for the fences with exceptional power.
Round two came with a brief moment of stand up and Smith flopping to his back in hopes of gaining a little control over the situation. The ground control was stopped abruptly by the ref as he felt the action was inefficient and brought the fighters back to their feet.
Smith quickly clinched up and began driving knees and strikes to the body and head. After the non-stop two round battle Smith walked away with the 20-18 unanimous decision.

Corey Grant and Joe Kelso matched up for the first pro fight of the evening. This was an exciting fight for fans with many back and forth moments leaving the crowd waiting for the early win. When all was said and done Grant pocketed a unanimous decision. Grants’ continuous pace and persistence won over the judges as he prevailed by scores of 20 -18on all three cards.

Chris Holland took home the KOC welterweight title as he defeated Chris Saucedo by TKO in 42 seconds of the second round in yet another very entertaining bout which saw both combatants having there moments in the fight.

Jimmy Soiland defeated Gabe Contreras after a 3 round see-saw battle . Soiland proved to be too much in the end as he picked up the win via unanimous decision. Soiland is another great up and coming amatuer from the well known Gumm Mixed Martial Arts in south Denver.

Jay Jackson and Nick Andrews stepped in the cage for another entertaining KOC match up. This was an evenly skilled match up with both fighters having what it takes to stay in the fenced battle ground. It was the cornering that was the deciding factor as Jackson listened his way to a TKO victory. He maintained a full mount and handed out some mean GNP. The ref stopped the action at 1:26 of round 2.

Ian Chavez and Nick Albert faced off in the 5th preliminary bout of the night. It was Chavez that pulled out the victory by TKO at 1:48 of round one after he took back control and started raining down strong blows to Albert’s head.
Chavez took home his first victory and had his family and training coaches to thank for the preparation of the fight.

Mike Ruthford found his mark quickly on a more than game opponent in Joe Sally. Ruthford showed some great ground versatility before locking in a very tight guillotine at 1:13 picking up the KOC amateur bantamweight title along the way.

Tamobora Gerl showed he has a great ground game to go with his excellent stand up as he defeated James Valimont by triangle choke in 1:17 of the first round.
Gerl instantly landed a beautiful strike on the button sending Vailmont to the cage floor in a daze. Gerl left no time for Vailmont to recover as he quickly jumped on and continued chastisement. Gerl continues to improve his game every appearance in the cage.
Training at the Spartan House is paying off dividends as many well known fighters from northern Colorado train there and appear to be giving Gerl an arsenal of great training partners to work with on a daily basis.

Mike Palo defeated Bobby Cassada with a great ground performance to open up the RNC submission at 1:35 of round 1. Palo showed great ground movement as well as high paced pressure to overwhelm Cassada and claimed the victory.

Julian Gonzales improved his record to 2-0 after his third round TKO over Eric Fuller. Both fighters came prepared for the fight as they were showcasing great all around MMA skills.
The ref stepped in for Fullers defense at the 23 second mark of the round.

Camozzi Drops Decision To Taylor, Loses Title!
Posted on: March 29, 2009No comments yet
With a fight crowd waiting in anticipation for one of the better fight cards Colorado has seen in recent months, King Of Champions packed in over 2000 MMA spectators at the Crown Plaza Event Center.
KOC “SHOCKWAVE” was bigger and better then ever, and we were in for another great night of mixed martial arts.
There were 11 scheduled bouts on the card including 4 professional, 1 female and 6 amateur fights for fans to flourish upon.
In the main event of the evening, one of Colorado’s most well known and impressive fighters Chris Cammozzi took on Ultimate Fighter alum and reality star standout Jesse Taylor.
Taylor instantly went for the take down driving Camozzi back, and to the canvas to start the first stanza.
Camozzi worked his way back to his feet and Taylor drove him back down, letting it be known he wanted this fight to stay on the ground.
Taylor moved on to deliver strikes from side control and used his superior wrestling skills to move around Camozzi and control the ground action in what seemed to be a relatively effortless manner.
Taylor transferred to back control and started working on a RNC. Camozzi did what he could to halt the choke attempt, but Taylor continued working to lock it in.
Taylor was unsuccessful in his attempts and Camozzi did an excellent job defending the powerful grip of his opponent. Camozzi then worked to side control and delivered some GNP before the end of the first round.
Taylor started round 2 with another double leg take down, obviously wanting nothing to do with the excellent stand up of Camozzi.
Taylor continued with his ground mission, delivering punishment from various positions.
Camozzi was defiantly staying active in his guard with submission attempts but Taylor just happened to have the counter to keep them short lived and ineffective.
Referee Tim Mills called a halt to the action midway through the round to stand the fighters due to a lull in action on the canvas. Camozzi took advantage as he landed a solid shot to the head of Taylor.
Taylor once again unloaded the double leg taking the fight back to his comfort zone and ended the round landing elbows and enforcing his GNP on Camozzi.
Round 3 began where the second ended as Taylor immediately went for another take down and quickly started his GNP and displayed unstoppable ground control. Camozzi stuck with his active guard pulling a heel hook to side control then back control and once again Taylor swiftly adjusted and avoided any trouble.
The round continued with Taylor controlling the ground while Camozzi was busy working to escape as the round came to an end.
All 3 judges had the fight scored in favor of an extremely exhausted Jesse Taylor as he was crowned the new champion.
In the co-main event Rocky Johnson defended his KOC 155 lb. title against the talented Bryan Craven.
Craven started the round by landing a couple good leg kicks while Johnson responded by shooting for the take down but only to get rejected.
Johnson was persistent in taking the fight to the ground but Craven had great take down defense landing some good counter strikes. Both fighters were successful landing strikes, elbows and a variety of submission attempts in the early going.
Craven ended the first round with a vicious right hand to the face of Johnson.
Round 2 began back to the ground with Johnson landing some GNP and great submission attempts. Craven worked to the guard of Johnson landing mean GNP to weaken his opponent.
The fight continued with back and forth action as many spectators cheered on the combatants. the round ended with Craven landing blows from the bottom and rising to his feet and landing another nice right hand to the face of Johnson.
Craven started the final round with great stand up landing punishing knees and leg kicks. Craven seemed to have a slight advantage in the stand up while Johnson controlled the ground attack.
When the smoke cleared it was back in the hands of the judges whom sided with Johnson via split decision as Rocky Johnson retained his KOC crown.
Josh Huber made his 140 lb. professional debut against Travis Sherman. Huber came out swinging for the fences backing Sherman to the cage. Sherman was overwhelmed by the flurry and resorts to falling into his guard.
Huber took no time in moving to the mount and slithering to back control. Huber took a second to better his position and lock in the RNC. Huber was claimed the victor at 1:23 of the first round and took home his first professional win.
Jeremy Malaterre was set to do battle in a rematch with Alfredo Corona in his pro debut.
Malaterre started in the clinch with vicious knees against the cage as both fighters exchanged kicks and strikes before Corona pulls guard hoping to bring the fight to the ground.
Malaterre did not mind the guard as he was still delivering GNP and defending submission attempts.
The GNP action continued to finish off the first round.
Malaterre began round 2 with a jab, cross, head kick combo. Corona again felt he would be better off and pulls guard but gets tossed as Maleterre moved to side control. Malaterre delivered more GNP and elbows while Corona took what he had to offer.
Round 2 ended much like the first with Malaterre in Coronas guard finding a way so sneak in a punch or two while Corona did what he could to lesson the damage and move to a better position.
This professional fight was scheduled for 2 rounds and Malaterre walked out with a unanimous decision.
Joey Banks put his KOC Amateur 145 lb Title on the line against KOC Jr. Lightweight Title holder Matt Vigil. Banks started with promising stand up and take down defense landing numerous clean shots.
Vigil continued to try to get the fight to the ground and was eventually successful. Vigil moved directly to side control and started punishing Banks with strikes and elbows.
Vigil began to advance to the mount and Banks performed a sweep that Vigil put a quick ending to.
Round 2 Banks started with good combinations and landed some good shots as Vigil again wanted the fight on the ground where he clearly had an advantage.
Banks had several submissions but none he could finish, while Vigil continued to strike any way possible landing elbows and punches to the head and body.
Round 3 was back to the canvas and Vigil was swinging like he wanting to finish the fight as Banks continued to stay in the guard and take the punishment.
Vigil sensed the opportunity to finish the fight and turned up the heat landing unstoppable elbows and GNP.
The ref called a stop the action at 1:45 in round 3.
Vigil became the first amateur fighter to hold current titles in two KOC weight divisions.
After the interview with promoter Jamie Addie, Vigil took a moment to propose to his beautiful girlfriend in calibration.
Ramico Blackmon defeated Jay Wymer at 1:19 of the first round by TKO.

Diana Rael defeated Kelly Brown by unanimous decision.
Jason Clayton defeated Sebastian White by heel hook at 1:38 of round 1.
James Valmont defeated Ali Hanjani by unanimous decision.
Jim Soiland defeated Anthony Gonzales by arm bar in only 39 seconds.
Geoff Brokx defeated Tyson Vigil at 1:06 of the first by arm bar.

Rocky Gets Nod Over Stonehouse!
Posted on: February 9, 2009No comments yet
February 7th King of Champions presented MMA enthusiast with Apocalypse. With 11 action packed bouts and a great display of submissions, knock outs and stoppages the promotion gave fans what they were there to see and more.

In the main event we had the KOC Pro Light Weight title between Rocky “THE ROCK MONSTER” Johnson and former Kick Down armature lightweight champion Ian Stonehouse.

The fight started with the intensity of the entire crowd chanting the fighter’s names back and forth one half of the crowd then the other “Stonehouse, Johnson, Stonehouse, Johnson”. This continued through the entire fight.
This fight lived up to the hype as “Main Event” of the evening. The fighters began with a quick flurry to clinch up and exchanged powerful knees with bad intentions. Both fighters did a great job of showcasing stellar MMA skills, giving spectators a great back and forth action packed first round.

Round two the warriors began exchanging vicious leg kicks. Stonehouse gaining confidence in his stand up makes a decision to attempt a head kick that places him in the side control of Johnson. Johnson makes best of his situation and forces his ground and pound upon his opponent.

Stonehouse finds a break to work a great sweep and got back to his feet. Johnson immediately used his great wrestling and worked another take down. Stonehouse pulled guard to minimize the damage for the rest of the second round.

We began the third with Johnson slamming Stonehouse to the canvas with force. We continued with the back and forth action, takedowns and sweeps. Johnson found a break to catch an arm bar. Stonehouse quick on his game locks up his arm in defense and worked to improve his position.

Stonehouse finished the round on top feeding Johnson some ground and pound. The winner was now in the hands of the judges. The three judges scored the fight 30-27 in favor of the “Rock Monster” Rocky Johnson. Johnson became the KOC Pro Lightweight Champion with the victory.

In the co-main event we had James Mead vs. Pete Vandervot. This was a fight that pretty much went straight to the ground. The fighter had a series of sweeps to have Mead take over with his ground and pound.

Mead continued to put on the pressure landing devastating elbows and viscous ground and pound. Vandervot verbally taped 4:34 into the first round.
The KOC welterweight title was on the line for the top ranked amateurs. Derek Moralez and Troy Barron stepped into the cage to try and claim the title.

Moralez started with his signature HUGE slams. Barron worked his way back to his feet after taking a little ground and pound.

Moralez didn’t waste any time in putting on the heat and lands a devastating right hand dropping Barron sending him to the canvas.

Moralez continued with his overwhelming arsenal to assure Barron was not getting up. It only took Moralez 59 sec to finish his opponent.

Moralez became the KOC amateur welterweight champion. Moralez no holds the welterweight title in two different fight promotions.

Undefeated power house Jesse Henley and Josh Huber went to war over two rounds before Henley sunk in a head and arm triangle midway through the second round to get the submission win to maintain his unblemished record.
Dan Craft wasted no time letting his fist fly against Masson Hoffman as he took the fight to the ground and begin his GNP assault forcing Hoffman to tap with just under 2 minutes gone in the first.

Pueblo’s Micky Koonce had his hands full with Travis Hollis as they exchanged strikes and displayed very well rounded ground games before Koonce rained down strikes from top position to get the TKO victory at the 2:25 mark in round two.

Kelly Brown showed more heart and determination in her all out war with Audrey Perkins than I have seen in an MMA fight. That may even be an understatement as these to women put on one hell of a fight. Unfortunately for Brown she came up short as Perkins was declared the winner by unanimous decision, but by no means was Brown a loser in this fight!

Anthony Lobato secured the RNC on Anthony Chavez at the 2:52 mark of round one after some great back and forth action to get the victory.

Miguel Martinez and Zachary Chavez let it all hang out over two rounds before Chavez was unable to continue prior to the final round giving Martinez the victory.

Geoff Brokx and Tony Gonzalez started of the night off fights as Brokx locked in the arm bar for the submission midway through the 1st round.
